What you don’t get told when making a website
Everyone will tell you that it is easy to make a website. This is correct these days with many options available with one click installs of WordPress etc. It may only take a hour or so to register a domain, pick a hosting company and decide on a theme for your website.
What most don’t tell you is the little details that you need to take care of to get your site notice by search engines.
Once you have setup your website and filled it with content, you’ll want people to be able to find it when they are searching for your content.
Why you need a sitemap
However, if you don’t make a sitemap of your website and submit it to Google, it may end up on a page to far back in the search to ever be found. Your website needs to be on the 1st or 2nd page of the search engine people are using. The website also has to be verified with Google if you want to use tools available from Google to monitor your website’s activity. These tools are on Google Search and Google Analytics.
If your new to making websites, working out how to create a sitemap and submit it, verifying your site and generally getting your site found by search engines can be frustrating.
I used SEO by Yoast on my website, which enables making a site map very easy once you know how. Most WordPress themes have a plugin for making site maps of your site.
Using SEO by Yoast to make a sitemap is done by first getting the plugin and activating it. Then go to the general button, then to the features button and there you will find a button for site map. Turn the site map button on and it will generate a site map for your site. To get your site map to submit to Google, click on the ? symbol, this will allow you to see your site map as below. Just copy and paste each site map that you want to submit to Google.
You can find more information about XML sitemaps on sitemaps.org.
This XML Sitemap Index file contains 4 sitemaps.
Verifying your website can be difficult if you have no coding knowledge like me, but YouTube is a good place to find how to videos on verifying your website. Google Search also has a video on how to verify your website, but I found it better explained in a video on YouTube HERE , because you have to go into the coding area of your website.

This is a couple of things I have worked out over the last few months of having a website that most of the gurus on the web don’t tell newbies to creating websites. I hope this helps people get their websites onto search engines faster then i have taken to get my website running well.
